The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down those responsible for the cult-related killings that rocked the Nibo community in Awka South Local Government Area on Sunday.
At least 13 people were killed when suspected cultists stormed an area near the venue of the community’s New Yam festival, known as the ‘Nibo Onwa Asaa’ festival. The attackers, arriving in a Lexus 300 SUV, opened fire on festival-goers near Oye Nwochichi Market, by Nibo Old Maternity, killing eight people on the spot. The gunmen then moved to another location, where more lives were lost.
In a press release on Monday, Anambra State’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed the government’s awareness of the brutal attack and assured the public that efforts to apprehend the culprits were already underway.
Mefor noted, “This incident is yet another example of the violence tied to cult activities in recent times. The government is resolute in putting an end to this menace.”
He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and guaranteed that the authorities would fully investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice. The commissioner also urged the public to provide any information that could aid in the arrest of the perpetrators, promising confidentiality and a substantial reward.
Meanwhile, Mefor advised residents to continue their daily activities without fear, as the government collaborates with security agencies to manage the situation. He added that hotlines would soon be available for reporting information on the case and related incidents.
