Mr. Haruna was apprehended by Nasarawa Command police on Sunday after he escaped from the Kuje Correctional Center.
The 35-year-old fugitive was apprehended by command personnel in Masaka, Karu local government region of the state.
The defendant was detained for burglary on June 8, 2023, according to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel.
“During questioning, the suspect confessed to having escaped from Kuje prison when it was attacked in 2022,” he said.
His capture makes him the third re-arrested escapee from the Correctional Center since its terrorist attack in 2022.
In April 2023, an escapee, Salisu Buhari, was apprehended by command operatives in the Nassarawa local government area of the state during a sting operation.
A few days after the facility attack, another escapee, Hassan Hassan, a suspected Boko Haram member, was apprehended in the state’s Keffi local government area by command operatives.
In an interview with journalists at the command headquarters in Lafia on Wednesday, Haruna Sunday stated that while he was among the escapees, he is not a terrorist.
He said that while awaiting trial, the institution was broken into by terrorists who liberated him and others.
“I was awaiting trial when one night I had a gun shot and before I knew it some people believed to be terrorists broke into the prison, forcing all prions inmates out of the prison and this is how I escaped from Kuje prison,” he revealed.
According to DSP Nansel, the Kuje escapee will be turned over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.
