Prominent leaders and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ibadan North West Local Government have rejected the recent inauguration of Mr. Olusola Adekanbi as the party’s chairman in the area, describing the process as an imposition.
The APC Chairman in Oyo State, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo, had earlier inaugurated chairmen in several local government areas. However, some party stakeholders in Ibadan North West have instead affirmed Mr. Rahmon Ojuolape as the legitimate chairman.
In a protest letter signed by over 20 chieftains, including Alhaji Biodun Adeleye, Alhaji Jelili Asukuna, Apostle Dada, Chief Segun Adeleke, Hon. Tajudeen Adelabu, Hon. Z.O. Adeosun, among others, the group stated that the congress which produced Ojuolape was conducted by Mr. Ajuwon Yusuff and Mr. Olaitan Petter, and was witnessed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agents.
The letter read in part:
“We, the members of the All Progressives Congress in Ibadan North West Local Government, strongly reject the recently inaugurated local government chairman and executive members. The faction led by Alhaji Adewolu Oluokun has dominated party structures with less than 25% of party followers, nominating Alhaji Remi Sodiq as local government ambassador and securing 75% of ward ambassadors, contradicting party principles of rotation and inclusivity. We allege that Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle is behind this minority dominance.”
The chieftains also raised concerns over irregularities in wards 2, 3, 4, 7, and 11, alleging that conflicting lists were submitted, and minority interests were prioritized under alleged influence from Alhaji Ibikunle. The group demanded a thorough investigation, fair representation, and resolution of ward-level disputes, warning that failure to act could lead to suspension of local meetings and further setbacks.
When contacted, APC Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Mr. Wasiu Olawale Sadare, confirmed receiving the allegations and promised an investigation. He stated, “I have not heard it before; it is strange to me. But if allowed to investigate, we will find out what is happening and issue a release if necessary.”
The situation underscores ongoing internal disputes in party structures ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, with stakeholders calling for transparency and inclusivity in leadership selections.
