The All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its ward congresses in Ahoada East and Khana Local Government Areas of Rivers State, setting the stage for its primaries ahead of the February 21 by-elections into the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The by-elections are being held to fill vacant legislative seats, with the elected delegates mandated to choose the party’s flagbearers for the affected constituencies.
In Ahoada East State Constituency II, a seven-member APC Congress Committee, chaired by Smart Iheanazo, supervised the exercise. Members of the party’s appeal committee were also present as the team toured all six wards to monitor proceedings and enforce compliance with APC guidelines.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) observed the congress, led by the Assistant Electoral Officer (Operations) for Ahoada East, Okogbule Emilia. At the end of the process, five delegates emerged from each ward.
A similar exercise took place in Khana Local Government Area, where party officials conducted the congress in line with the APC constitution and approved electoral procedures. The process was overseen by the APC Delegate Congress and Primary Election Committee, headed by Oyoala Peter.
INEC officials monitored the Khana congress, while security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police, were deployed to ensure a peaceful exercise. As in Ahoada East, five delegates were elected from each ward.
Party officials described the congresses in both local government areas as peaceful, orderly, and transparent, expressing confidence that the process has strengthened the party’s preparations for the forthcoming by-elections.
