The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has cautioned Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against politicizing philanthropic gestures, particularly the recent donation to the National Library by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu during her birthday celebration.
Lagos APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, issued the warning on Monday, stressing that public institutions across the world thrive on private donations and endowments that complement government efforts in nation-building.
Oladejo argued that such contributions reflect shared responsibility for strengthening public institutions and should be celebrated rather than questioned. He urged Nigerians to view the First Lady’s gift as a genuine step toward supporting education and national development, not through partisan lenses.
“The focus should remain on strengthening national institutions and deepening a culture of public-private partnerships for the collective good,” Oladejo said.
Obi had earlier criticized the development, stating that Nigeria should not have to wait for birthday gifts to complete its National Library project.
