The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election, tightening the ruling party’s grip across key councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Abubakar secured a commanding 15,536 votes, decisively defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, who garnered 4,547 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) trailed distantly with 37 votes.

The APC extended its dominance to Kwali Area Council, where its candidate, Daniel Nuhu, clinched 17,032 votes to overpower PDP’s Haruna Pai, who polled 8,575 votes. The margin underscored the party’s firm control in the council.

In the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu of the APC emerged victorious after amassing 40,295 votes. He outpaced the ADC candidate, who secured 12,109 votes, while the PDP candidate finished third with 3,398 votes.

The ruling party also triumphed in Bwari Area Council. APC candidate Joshua Ishaku captured the chairmanship seat with 18,466 votes. The ADC candidate followed with 4,254 votes, while the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate polled 3,515 votes to place third.

However, the PDP broke the APC’s winning streak in Gwagwalada Area Council. Its candidate, Mohammed Kasim, polled 22,165 votes to defeat APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who scored 17,788 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Biko Umar, came third with 1,687 votes.

The results reflect a decisive performance by the APC across four of the six FCT area councils, while the PDP secured a strategic victory in Gwagwalada.
