Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, was named one of the top three men’s managers for the FIFA The Best Awards on Friday.
After 36 years, Scaloni’s victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup returned the treasured World Cup trophy to Argentina. After a rough start against Saudi Arabia, Argentina went on to defeat the incumbent champion France in the final.
In addition to leading the Albiceleste to their first international triumph in white and blue in 2021, Scaloni also led them to victory in the Copa America in 2018.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, and Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Real Madrid, are the other two managers on the list. While Carlos Ancelotti led his team to the 14th Champions League trophy last year, Guardiola has won four Premier League titles in his six years at the club.
Scaloni became the third manager from Argentina to ever be included on the shortlist of three, after fellow countrymen Marcelo Bielsa and Mauricio Pochettino.
Only Guardiola, one of the three on this year’s list, has previously made the top 10. In 2019 and 2021, the Spaniard was on the list, coming in second and third, respectively.
The three coaches were chosen from a list of six coaches who were shortlisted the previous year, and the winner will be announced on February 27, 2023.
The Best FIFA Awards, which were established in 2016, honor noteworthy accomplishments on and off the field through voting from media representatives, national team coaches, and captains.
More will come.
