More than 1,500,000 people tried to get tickets for Argentina’s first game after winning the World Cup, despite the exorbitant pricing in a nation struggling with growing inflation, and the event sold out.
The Argentina-Panama game will take place on March 23 at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires, the biggest stadium in the nation with a seating capacity of 83,000.
With a virtual line of 1,550,000 people, ticket costs, which ranged from 12,000 to 49,000 Argentine pesos ($59 to $241), did not deter demand.
Local and foreign media outlets expressed a desire to witness Lionel Messi’s team, and Argentina Football Association President Claudio Tapia claimed that the match had resulted in the “biggest media demand in history” with more than 131,000 requests for credentials.
“We would ideally be able to accommodate all of them, but two River (Monumental) stadiums would be required, just for journalists. “This is pure madness for Argentina,” Tapia wrote on Twitter.
The friendly will mark Argentina’s first game in front of their supporters since defeating France on penalties in the World Cup final last year in Qatar to win the title for the first time in 36 years and ignite tremendous celebrations around the nation.
On March 28 in the region of Santiago del Estero, Argentina will also host Curacao in front of 30,000 spectators.
