On Wednesday, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola was sworn in as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Muhammadu Buhari (CJN).

The weekly virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council was preceded by the swearing-in ceremony, which took place in the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja (FEC).

Other Supreme Court justices, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Ministers, and other cabinet officials all attended the occasion, as did Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State.

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Bambari, and Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno, the National Security Adviser (NSA), were all seated as witnesses to the event (Rtd).

A number of ministers came to the Council meeting this week, including Hadi Sirika (Aviation), Olorunnimbe Mamora (Science, Technology, and Innovation), Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment), Abubakar Malami (Attorney-General and Justice), Niyi Adebayo (Industry, Trade and Investment), Babatunde Fashola (Works and Housing), and others.

Justice Ariwoola promised changes at the top court and made an appeal to national lawmakers to allow the judiciary to function effectively as the 2023 elections draw near.
Governor Seyi Makinde thanked the president on behalf of the people and administration of Oyo State.

Following Justice Tanko Muhammad’s resignation due to illness on June 27, 2022, Justice Ariwoola was named acting chief justice of Nigeria.

The president requested confirmation from the senate in July of Ariwoola’s nomination as the substantive CJN.

His appointment had been approved by the senate during plenary on September 21.

Ariwoola has been in charge ever since Ibrahim Muhammad resigned.

Muhammad resigned after being accused of abdicating his duties as the chief justice of the supreme court by 14 of its justices.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman and former minister for special duties, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, passed away recently, and the Council observed a moment of quiet in his memory.
