The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna as its new National President. Prof. Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Prof. Victor Osodeke, who served as president since 2021.
The transition in leadership was confirmed during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held in Benin, Edo State, where union members from across Nigeria gathered to discuss the future of the organization and its priorities.
Prof. Piwuna, a strong advocate for university lecturers’ welfare and reforms in Nigeria’s higher education system, previously served as the union’s Vice President. His election comes at a critical time, as ASUU continues to engage the federal government on vital issues, including adequate funding, staff welfare, and the autonomy of public universities.
