The official touchdown of the first test flights at the Ogun State Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport at Iperu-Ilishan Road, Ikene local government, in Ogun State, has made history.

To the delight of the Ogun people who had gathered at the airport earlier to witness the event, the first private aircraft touched down at 2:15 pm.

The Valuejet airline’s arrival at 3:30 pm, the first commercial flight to do so at the cargo airport, was the day’s high point.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole, and members of the traditional class, including the Akarigbo of Remonland Awujale of Ijebu, represented by the Orimolusi of Ijebu Igbo, were among the dignitaries from Ogun State who were present to witness the accomplishment.

The cargo airport, according to the state government, is a massive airport project that Governor Dapo Abiodun conceptualized in order to build the necessary infrastructure to promote the exportation of both agricultural and non-agricultural goods and to reenergize additional social and economic activities, which will subsequently increase the State’s drive for revenue generation.

Former governor Gbenga Daniel reminisced about the events that led to the concept of the cargo airport and the decision to build it as a rival to Lagos International Airport in order to facilitate trade and the movement of commodities for state farmers.
