Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding the administration’s approach to governance and election strategy. In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, the veteran politician argued that relying on temporary relief measures, such as the distribution of food items, is an insufficient substitute for genuine public trust and effective leadership.

The message, titled “Rice, Spaghetti Can’t Save You,” was delivered through Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu. It suggests that while palliatives like bags of rice and noodles might offer short-term assistance to struggling families, they do not translate into political legitimacy. Atiku expressed deep concern over what he perceives as a move toward a one-party state, noting that the ruling party has managed to draw over 30 state governors into its circle. According to Atiku, this consolidation of power reflects a fear of credible opposition and the true will of the Nigerian voter rather than actual administrative strength.

The statement also highlighted the growing anxiety regarding the independence of key institutions. Atiku criticized the alleged use of judicial interventions to weaken opposition parties and the “reckless” use of detention orders against political rivals. He warned that if the current political trajectory continues, the nation risks entering a system where elections are merely symbolic, and real competition is effectively neutralized. The PDP chieftain questioned why a government with such vast control still appears hesitant to embrace a completely free and fair electoral process.

As the country looks toward the 2027 elections, Atiku urged citizens to remain vigilant in safeguarding their democratic choices. He concluded by asserting that leadership should never be so insulated that it avoids a fair contest, insisting that Nigerians deserve transparency and a legitimate choice at the ballot box.

Do you believe that government palliatives have a significant impact on how Nigerians choose their leaders during elections?
