In light of numerous cases of racism against players in the top flight this season, notably repeated taunts thrown at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr., Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata believes that fans who yell racist epithets should be permanently barred from sporting events.
This season, the Brazilian forward Vinicius has experienced several instances of racial abuse from rival fans. The most recent incident occurred on Saturday during Real’s 2-0 LaLiga victory over Osasuna.
Before Real hosted Atletico at the weekend, Morata told ESPN on Wednesday, “The first time a person does something in a stadium he should be banned for life.”
It’s inexplicable and unacceptable. That has no business being used in football. I believe it should be grounds for ejecting them.
“We must use the Premier League as an illustration. A person will not be permitted to participate in a sporting event once they have committed such a crime on a football field or in public. That is how it ought to be in Spain as well.
LaLiga reported on Wednesday that it has filed three legal complaints over racial epithets made during games, including two directed towards Vinicius.
According to LaLiga, one Real Mallorca fan was recognized for disparaging Vinicius and Samu Chukwueze of Villarreal. The police have also interviewed the fan.
A supporter of Osasuna was the target of the third grievance for insulting Vinicius. The person has not yet been named.
Eight complaints have already been made by the league against Vinicius for racial chants or epithets.
Three complaints have been dismissed, and three more are currently being investigated. One of them concerns the hanging of a mannequin sporting Vinicius’ No. 20 jersey from a bridge outside Real’s training facility prior to the derby match against Atletico last month.
