Tunji Wusu –
In their second group match of the current Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Falcons shocked co-hosts Australia 3-2 to improve their chances of moving on to the second round.
The Falcons defeated the co-hosts with a perfect score thanks to goals from Asisat Oshoala, Uchenna Kanu, and Osinachi Ohale, boosting their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.
Nigeria had a fantastic game, and Oshoala’s outstanding goal in the 72nd minute, just minutes after coming on, was the cherry on top.
A few minutes before halftime, the hosts took the lead thanks to a wonderful move by Foord that found Van Egmond, who scored her 31st goal in her 130th appearance for the Matildas.
With the last kick of the first half, Uchenna Kanu equalized the score by firing a cool, well-placed shot past the Australian defense.
Rasheedat Ajibade, who was attacking from the left side, got the perfect space to slide the ball home with an excellent effort, and Kanu connected to it brilliantly.
The Falcons put on a strong defensive and counterattacking performance, and in the 41st minute, Christy Uchiebe nearly put the Falcons ahead except for a regrettable and careless deflection by Plumptre.
Following her exploits against Canada, Chiamaka Nnadozie was likewise outstanding in preventing the Falcons from conceding during the game.
