Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, the spouse of Kebbi State Governor, has been proposed to lead the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
The UICC, a global non-governmental organization with members in 172 nations and a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), is at the forefront of lobbying efforts and capacity building to help and advance the cancer community.
The other candidates for the job are Ulrika Kagstrom of Sweden and Daiming Fan of China, in addition to Bagudu.
The union’s member organizations will vote for the person they want to lead the organization for two years on October 11, 2022.
Bagudu was chosen in 2018 to serve a two-year term as a Director of the UICC. She was elected to a second two-year term as a Director in 2020.
Bagudu expanded on her efforts as a cancer advocate during her four years as director to increase awareness of UICC in Nigeria and numerous other African nations. She organized mainstream cancer advocacy and care.
She serves as the director of the First Ladies Against Cancer Initiative and has advocated before the National and State Assemblies for better cancer care funding and legislation.
In response to a question about her plans as UICC President, Shinkafi-Bagudu stated that she would prioritize ensuring that the resources required for cancer treatment are available, accessible, and affordable.
