Babatunji Wusu –

Residents of Moriki town in Zamfara State have managed to negotiate a reduction in the ransom demanded by bandit leader Bello Turji, bringing it down from ₦50 million to ₦30 million. This ransom is reportedly compensation for cattle killed by the new commander of the Army base in Moriki. The payment deadline is set for Wednesday.

Households are expected to contribute ₦10,000 each, while unmarried individuals must pay ₦2,000. Despite the commander’s assurances that he will prevent further harm to Turji’s livestock, the villagers are proceeding with the payment. They are concerned that failing to meet Turji’s demands could lead to intensified violence against them.

In a related development, around fifteen local politicians and social activists remain in Turji’s captivity, even with military presence in the area.

Meanwhile, a video has emerged showing three Nigerian soldiers challenging Bello Turji. In the video, which is primarily in Hausa, the soldiers criticize the lack of action from higher authorities and directly confront Turji, urging him to come out of hiding and face them. They call on Turji to stop harming innocent civilians and remind him of their past successes against Boko Haram. The soldiers expressed frustration at the situation and challenged Turji’s bravery, reflecting their readiness to take action if ordered.
