Seven people have been confirmed dead following a nighttime attack by suspected bandits in Tatara village, Pandan Development Area of Karu Local Government in Nasarawa State on Sunday.
According to an eyewitness, the attackers, believed to be of Fulani origin, were reportedly fleeing from military operations that recently dislodged terrorists in neighboring states such as Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna. The attack, which began around 10:00 pm on Saturday, left seven people dead, including women.
The eyewitness described the assault as unusual and different from previous incidents in the area. “They arrived on motorbikes, heavily armed, and started shooting indiscriminately. The language they were speaking was Fulani,” the witness said.
The attackers were reportedly carrying sophisticated weapons, which left the community in fear. “Many residents initially thought it was a robbery, but it soon became clear that they were well-trained terrorists. If not for the swift response of security forces, the entire village could have been wiped out,” the witness added.
Before security personnel arrived, seven people had already lost their lives. Other sources confirmed that this attack is part of a series of violent incidents that have plagued the village in recent times.
Although local police have classified the attack as a robbery, many in the community are calling for increased security presence, citing ongoing criminal activities in the area.
They appeal to the state government to deploy more soldiers to prevent further violence.
