Governor Bala Mohammed Calls for Transparency in Oil and Gas Revenue Distribution

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has called on the Federal Government to provide a clear explanation regarding the absence of direct benefits from Nigeria’s oil and gas resources for ordinary Nigerians, a situation he claims has worsened since President Bola Tinubu’s administration came into power.

Governor Mohammed made these remarks on Monday when the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, paid him a courtesy visit in Bauchi ahead of the 2024 National Council on Finance and Economic Development conference, which the state will host.

Call for Transparency in Resource Distribution:

Governor Mohammed raised concerns about the lack of transparency and fairness in the distribution of Nigeria’s oil and gas wealth. He noted that while Nigeria is one of the largest oil-producing nations in the world, Nigerians have not felt the direct benefits of this resource in recent years, particularly since the current administration took office.

“It is a miracle that we are one of the biggest oil-producing nations, but we have not benefited for some time since you came on board,” Mohammed stated, urging the federal government to be open about the challenges it faces in the oil and gas sector. He emphasized that the government must ensure that the public understands the situation, as this would foster inclusion and accountability.

Emphasis on Subnational Role:

Governor Mohammed stressed the importance of improving the oil production sector and ensuring that the revenues from oil are not only produced and sold but are properly managed and shared equitably among states. He called for financial services that would help subnational governments like Bauchi enhance their productivity and use resources wisely.

“You have to make our oil and gas sector to produce. Not only to produce and sell but put it in our Treasury for distribution and sharing,” Mohammed urged. He further noted, “Without us (the states), there will be no Federal Government,” underscoring the critical role of state governments in the national economy.

Loyalty to the Federal Government Despite Criticism:

Despite his strong comments, Governor Mohammed reiterated his loyalty to the Federal Government, emphasizing that his demand for transparency and fair treatment was in the spirit of leadership and responsibility. He called for the fair treatment of all citizens, regardless of their region or political affiliation.

Minister Wale Edun’s Remarks:

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, explained that the purpose of his visit was to discuss preparations for the 2024 conference and engage in dialogue about the financial and economic needs of various states. He acknowledged the importance of such forums in building trust and clarifying issues, which would help the country fulfill its potential.

Edun added that the discussions during the conference would help improve mutual understanding of Nigeria’s financial needs and the resources available at both the national and subnational levels. He emphasized that this dialogue would lead to better cooperation and more effective utilization of the country’s economic resources.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s call for greater transparency and fairness in oil and gas revenue distribution highlights ongoing concerns over the equitable sharing of national resources. His remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are questioning how the country’s wealth from natural resources is being utilized, especially in light of the removal of fuel subsidies. The upcoming National Council on Finance and Economic Development conference in Bauchi is expected to provide a platform for further discussion on these critical issues.
