The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa Douye Diri has on Wednesday shunned the invitation by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to respond to issues of asset declaration.
The CCB had accused Diri of failure to declare his assets when he served as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Henry Seriake Dickson.
Diri, who was slated to appear before the Bureau by 11am, failed to appear as he said police to be on campaign tour in Bayelsa.
Joseph Amberkedrimo who is the Executive Director of the Bayelsa Coalition For Good Governance, had, in a petition dated September 17, 2019, filed a petition against Diri with the CCB against Diri alleging breaches of code of conduct.
The petitioner had averred that as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor from 2012 and 2013, as well as Principal Executive Secretary from 2013 to 2014, Dirri to declare his assets with the CCB as a public officer.
Reacting to the development, Amberkedrimo stated in Abuja on Wednesday that Diri’s failure to honour the CCB invitation constituted a grave disrespect for the rule of law and constituted authority.
He charged the CCB to do the needful as Diri cannot be above the law and that he cannot continue to hold the CCB to ransom.
Amberkedrimo said, “I call on the CCB to stand up to their responsibilities and carry out their mandate without fear or favour and there should be no cover up.
“The action of Diri has proven that he is an untrustworthy individual and a man not to be entrusted with a high office of a Governor and that he cannot be trusted with the resources of Bayelsa state.
He called on the CCB to investigate the allegations against Diri and accordingly charge him to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for trial.
It was gathered that Diri had on three different occasions shunned the CCB invitation; and that the Bureau may have no other option than to file charges against him at the Conduct Tribunal.
