Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State announced plans to launch an independent power project soon, aiming to end months of darkness caused by vandalized power towers disconnecting the state from the national grid. Speaking at the 13th Annual Thanksgiving at Yenagoa’s Ecumenical Centre, Diri acknowledged that the blackout has heavily impacted residents since Bayelsa’s gas turbines ceased operation three months ago. Although he provided no specific details on the project, he assured that efforts are underway to restore power, as the state has invested in repairing federal transmission infrastructure.
Reflecting on the significance of the Thanksgiving Day, held every November 2 since 2012, Diri said, “Our people come not out of obligation, but to thank God for His continued goodness.” He also expressed gratitude for peace, security, and the absence of severe floods this year, crediting community support and strong collaboration with service commanders for the state’s progress.
