Housing And Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson has tested positive for the coronavirus, a department spokesperson confirmed Monday.
“Secretary Carson has tested positive for the coronavirus,” Carson’s chief of staff, Coalter Baker told thepremiernewsonline in a statement. “He is in good spirits and feels fortunate to have access to effective therapeutics which aid and markedly speed his recovery.”
It was unclear if the 69-year-old Carson was displaying any symptoms.
Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, was one of more than 100 people who attended President Donald Trump’s election night party at the White House on Tuesday. Since then, Mark Meadows, the president’s chief of staff, as well as other White House aides have also tested positive for COVID-19.
The outbreak marks a resurgence of the virus among Trump administration staff. The president himself revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with the coronavirus after holding what has since been described as a “superspreader event” in the Rose Garden at the time Justice Amy Coney Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court. Several members of Vice President Mike Pence’s staff have also caught COVID-19.
