The Benue State House of Assembly is gearing up to tackle the escalating cost of rent across the state, particularly in urban centres like Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo.

In response to growing public outcry over unaffordable housing, Speaker Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh and Hon. Gbenda Terver have scheduled a high-stakes stakeholders’ meeting for July 15, 2025. The meeting will bring together landlords, house agents, and selected tenants to deliberate on the sharp rise in rental costs and propose lasting solutions.

Described as a consultative engagement, the session aims to uncover the root causes behind the persistent rent hikes while fostering dialogue between property owners and tenants. Lawmakers say the insights gathered will shape a balanced, inclusive rent control framework.

Sources within the Assembly revealed that the House is nearing the final stages of drafting a legislative bill aimed at regulating rent prices across the state — a move triggered by widespread frustration among residents over the high cost of accommodation.
