The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (Benue SEMA) has urged residents across the state to remain alert and take preventive measures against snake bites as the rainy season intensifies.

The agency issued the warning after several snakebite victims received treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH). It stressed that the danger is not limited to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, noting that anyone can be affected by snake attacks during this period.

According to Benue SEMA, snakes become more active during the rainy season, increasing the chances of human contact, especially in rural communities, farming settlements and areas with dense vegetation. As a result, the agency called on residents to take extra precautions to avoid dangerous encounters.

To reduce the risk of snake bites, the agency advised people to keep their surroundings clean by clearing bushes and overgrown vegetation around homes and public spaces. It also encouraged residents to remain cautious while travelling on village roads, working on farms or walking through bush paths.

In addition, Benue SEMA recommended the use of protective footwear during farming activities and urged residents to carry flashlights when moving around at night. These simple safety measures, the agency said, can help prevent accidental encounters with snakes.

The agency further advised anyone bitten by a snake to seek immediate medical attention rather than relying on self-treatment or traditional remedies. Prompt treatment, it noted, remains essential for preventing complications and improving recovery outcomes.

Highlighting the importance of snake bite prevention, the agency said communities must work together to maintain clean environments and raise awareness about safety measures. It added that collective action can significantly reduce the threat posed by snakes during the rainy season.

Benue SEMA also encouraged residents who need assistance or further information on snake bite prevention to contact the agency through the appropriate channels.
