Babatunji Wusu –
The Benue State Bureau for Education Quality Assurance (BEQA) has undertaken a significant step by closing 2,100 primary and secondary schools in its initial crackdown on illegally operating educational institutions across the state. Dr. Terna Francis, Director General of BEQA, revealed this during his attendance as the Special Guest of Honour at a Speech and Prize Giving Day event held at a school in Makurdi.
During the event, Dr. Francis emphasized several important points. He urged school proprietors to avoid pressuring parents regarding graduation expectations, particularly clarifying that Primary 6 no longer serves as a certification class. He disclosed that the closure affected 2,100 schools in the first phase of eliminating unaccredited educational institutions. Schools that have completed necessary recertification procedures were invited to collect certificates of consent, marking formal approval.
Recognizing the dedication of parents to providing quality education, Dr. Francis commended the efforts of the host school, noting satisfactory academic standards observed during his unannounced visits. He encouraged students to maintain focus on academic excellence and cautioned school owners against imposing undue financial burdens on parents.
Dr. Francis also informed the public about the adoption of the 9-3-4 educational system in Benue State, aligning with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education. Under this system, students progress from Basic 6 to Basic 7, and upon completing Basic 9, they receive the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) through the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Looking forward, Dr. Francis announced collaborative efforts with the Benue State Board of Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) and the Benue State Urban Development Board (BSUDB) to initiate the closure of unapproved educational institutions and the demolition of substandard ones, beginning in August. This initiative aims to uphold educational standards and ensure that all schools operating in Benue State meet necessary accreditation requirements.
