At least six people drowned and three others remain missing after a boat accident in Garin Faji, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The victims were among dozens of villagers fleeing a bandit raid when one of the boats ferrying them across the water capsized, witnesses said.

The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the tragedy, revealing that 19 passengers were rescued alive. Search and rescue teams are still combing the area in an effort to find the missing victims.

A senior SEMA official, who declined to be named, told journalists that the casualties underscore the rising dangers residents face as they attempt to escape violent attacks.

The accident comes less than a week after a similar tragedy in Goronyo Local Government Area, where four people lost their lives in another boat mishap during a bandit invasion.
