In the Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State, at least 25 recently built structures intended for returnees have reportedly been destroyed by suspected Boko Haram fighters.
According to reports, under the heat of the conflict, residents of Dikwa evacuated their homes and sought refuge as internally displaced persons, or IDPs.
Days after kidnapping IDPs who went into the bush to gather firewood, the report claims that rebels invaded a distant settlement in Gajibo, firing intermittently and setting over 25 newly constructed houses on fire.
The state capital, Maiduguri, is around 110 kilometers distant from Gajibo town.
Modu Kundiri, an eyewitness who was traveling from Gomboru to Maiduguri, claimed the soldiers ordered them to wait at Logomani village for around three hours.
The military told us that before we could leave Logomani, we had to wait for almost three hours, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“At Gajibo village in Dkiwa LGA, I saw and counted more than 25 newly constructed houses that were on fire,” Modu stated.
Sheriff Lawan, a local of Dikwa town, also corroborated the information over the phone with Daily Trust.
According to him, the rebels also detonated numerous IEDs at the active construction site in an attempt to halt the state government’s reconstruction and relocation efforts.
Sherrif stated, “The soldiers informed us that the insurgents had planted numerous IEDs at the construction site and they had already found some bombs.”
