Brazil defeated Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany in their joint bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and was officially named the host nation by the FIFA Congress on Friday.
In the electronic ballot, 119 member associations supported Brazil, while just 78 voted in favor of the combined European bid.
Following the withdrawal of South Africa’s application in November and the cancellation of the joint bid by the United States and Mexico late last month, the FIFA Congress on Friday chose one of the two remaining countries to host the 2027 event.
For the first time, every association that makes up FIFA was able to provide feedback on who will host the women’s competition. The FIFA Council, the governing body’s decision-making group, made the choice in the past.
Brazil, BNG, or abstain were the three alternatives available in the computerized ballot, which was accessible to 207 member associations.
Brazil was the clear favorite to win the match, especially after placing higher in a FIFA assessment report released the previous week. The FIFA Men’s World Cup was previously held in the nation in 2014.
