Social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) on Monday joined students in protesting the ongoing teachers’ strike, which has entered its ninth week.
The demonstration, held in front of the state education board headquarters, saw schoolchildren carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, demanding an immediate resolution to the standoff between the government and teachers.
Wearing a school uniform in solidarity with the students, VDM criticized the government for failing to implement the agreed salary increase for teachers. He noted that many teachers are still receiving N30,000 monthly, instead of the promised N70,000.
“How can you expect quality education when teachers are underpaid?” he said. “Nine weeks without learning is a heavy loss for these students. We must speak up.”
The strike, which began in April, has disrupted academic activities in public schools, with teachers insisting they will not resume until their demands are met.
VDM’s appearance at the protest has drawn widespread attention, with many on social media commending his involvement and calling on authorities to act swiftly.
The protest adds to growing pressure on the government to prioritise education and address the concerns of striking teachers
