The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to cease disbursing monthly financial allocations to the Rivers State government. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the order on Wednesday, declaring that the allocation and spending of funds by Governor Siminalayi Fubara since January were “a constitutional aberration.”
Justice Abdulmalik highlighted that Governor Fubara’s recent presentation of the 2024 budget to only a four-member House of Assembly disregarded constitutional requirements, stating that “such actions defy the 1999 Constitution.” Consequently, the court directed the CBN, the Accountant General, and major banks to stop Governor Fubara from accessing funds from the Federation Account.
