A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court located in Maitama has granted ₦300 million in bail to Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Emefiele is being charged with four counts related to producing new Naira notes without following the proper legal procedures.
In response to the accusations made against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he entered a not guilty plea.
The bail also stipulates that he must present two sureties, each of whom must be the owner of a titled property in the FCT’s Maitama district.
The defendant was instructed by Justice Anenih to submit his travel documents with the court and to refrain from leaving the nation without the court’s approval.
Judge Hamza Muazu, a different FCT High Court judge who is currently trying Emefiele in a different criminal matter, had previously granted him a similar bail; the judge accepted the terms connected to that bail.
The judge stated that Emefiele’s ability to present the certified true copies (CTCs) of the documents he filed to satisfy Justice Muazu’s earlier bail award would be sufficient.
She postponed the start of the trial until May 28.
