On Monday in Abuja, hundreds of Nigerians took to the streets in a significant protest against rising fuel prices, persistent shortages, and worsening economic conditions. The demonstration was led by Abdullahi Bilal of the Two Million Man March Against Oil Scam Cabal, alongside Barrister Napoleon Otache and Olayemi Isaac from the Citizens and Economic Freedom Rights Activists in Nigeria (CEFRAN).

Protesters called for urgent reforms in the oil sector, condemning the government’s failure to manage Nigeria’s oil resources effectively. They emphasized the debilitating impact of soaring fuel prices and prolonged fuel queues, which they argue are exacerbating inflation and pushing more citizens into poverty.

Criticism was directed at the current fuel subsidy system, which demonstrators claim benefits only a privileged few, leaving millions struggling with high costs. They demanded the full deregulation of the oil sector to foster transparency, competition, and fair pricing. The recurring importation of adulterated fuel was also condemned, described as a corrupt practice that harms vehicles and businesses while disrupting daily life.

The protesters expressed frustration over the unfulfilled promises of the Dangote Refinery, which was expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports despite substantial investments in refinery development and infrastructure upgrades. They argued that, as an oil-producing nation, Nigeria should not be experiencing such severe fuel shortages.

Highlighting the economic ramifications of the crisis, they noted inflation rates exceeding 24% and a staggering 200% increase in fuel costs, which they believe are driving more citizens into poverty. They urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the needs of citizens by reforming leadership within the oil sector and ensuring greater accountability.

In a press statement, Abdullahi Bilal conveyed the protesters’ sentiments, asserting, “This Two Million Man March represents the voices of Nigerians who feel betrayed by a system enriching a few at the expense of many. We call for the resignation of those leading the oil sector due to their failure to manage fuel prices and ensure a stable supply. Nigerians deserve full deregulation to promote fairness and competition in the oil sector.”

Barrister Napoleon Otache and Olayemi Isaac echoed these calls, demanding an end to fuel queues and accountability for the importation of substandard fuel despite assurances of quality control. They pledged to continue their protests until substantial changes are made to address these pressing issues.
