Babatunji Wusu –
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives in Nasarawa State successfully repelled an attack on their state command headquarters in Lafia by unknown assailants suspected to be bandits.
According to Jerry Victor, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in the state, the assailants, in large numbers, stormed the NSCDC’s Lafia headquarters on Monday morning, firing sporadically to intimidate the public. Victor confirmed these details in a statement released to the press, explaining that the gunmen attempted to breach the command’s perimeter fence and had positioned themselves strategically around the building.
“The NSCDC personnel promptly engaged the hoodlums, who aimed to free high-profile suspected criminals and kidnappers’ informants held by the command,” Victor stated.
Despite the intense gun battle that ensued between the attackers and NSCDC operatives, Victor clarified that no casualties were reported. He assured that calm had been restored to the area following the incident, which initially caused alarm among residents.
Victor also mentioned that the NSCDC had apprehended and detained five notorious suspects involved in various crimes, including two informants of kidnappers responsible for the recent abduction and subsequent murder of the 82-year-old father of a former state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Daniel Umaru Lagi.
The statement highlighted the recent surge in kidnapping cases in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, prompting local authorities to impose a curfew and restrict the movement of motorcycles and tricycles between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM for enhanced security measures.
