The Federal Government has confirmed the arrest of three Chinese nationals and two Nigerians suspected of illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State. This announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, through a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, on Monday in Abuja.
Alake stated that the suspects were apprehended at an illegal mining site in Rafin-Gabas, Agwada, within the Kokona Local Government Area. The arrests were executed by the ministry’s mining marshals, a team established to secure mining sites nationwide, following credible intelligence.
“The suspects were found mining without lawful authorization, extracting minerals such as fluorite, zinc, lead, and tin,” Alake noted. He further revealed that the suspects admitted to engaging in these illicit activities at the site for over two years, specifically since December 15, 2021. Despite receiving lawful advice to regularize their operations, the company continued its activities, leading to significant revenue losses for the Federal Government.
According to the minister, more than 200 illegal miners have been arrested to date, with approximately 140 currently facing prosecution across the country. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to reforming the mining sector, emphasizing that the mining marshals will remain vigilant in ensuring a secure environment for legitimate investors.
