Babatunji Wusu –

Several prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are stranded at the Kusalla orientation camp in Karaye Local Government Area of Kano State. These individuals were denied entry because they arrived late.

According to a source at the camp who spoke anonymously to Daily Trust, many of those affected come from far eastern and southern states. They likely faced travel delays and difficulties reaching the camp in the northern state. As a result, they are frustrated and uncertain about their future in the program.

One source said, “It’s really disheartening that we went through so much effort to get here only to be turned away. Some of us received our call-up letters late and spent two or three days traveling. Now, we’re stranded with about 100 of us here, unsure of what’s next.”

Another prospective corps member shared their experience: “I arrived at camp on Thursday, the second day of resumption. My vehicle broke down, so I didn’t get to Kano until around 1 a.m. After that, a vehicle hit my phone, which had all my documents stored on it. I had to get it repaired, which delayed me further. I reached the camp around 11 p.m., but by then everyone had gone to bed, and there was no one to assist us. Other camps reportedly have staff available to register late arrivals.

“Yesterday, we were told that the registration portal from Abuja had been closed. Some of us don’t even have money for food now, and some of the females are crying. We urgently need help.”

The stranded corps members are appealing to the relevant authorities to come to their aid as they are in a state of confusion and distress.
