The Enugu State Police Command has announced the conclusion of the orderly room trial for Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was implicated in the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah. The incident occurred on the evening of October 25, 2024, at the headquarters of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad in Enugu State.
In a statement issued on Monday, spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed that Inspector Joseph was found guilty and received the maximum penalty of dismissal, followed by prosecution in accordance with the Police Act and Regulations of 2020.
The statement read: “The Enugu State Police Command informs the public that the orderly room trial of Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph has been concluded. The Inspector was found culpable and has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force. He was arraigned today, October 28, 2024, at the Enugu East Magistrate Court for the offense of murder.”
The Chief Magistrate ordered that the former officer be remanded in the Enugu Correctional Custodial Centre, with the case file to be sent to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further action. The trial has been adjourned to November 12, 2024.
Commissioner of Police CP Kanayo Uzuegbu extended his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, expressing appreciation to the government and people of Enugu State for their support throughout the proceedings. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to discipline, assuring that under his leadership, all erring officers will be held accountable for their actions.
