Babatunji Wusu –
The Presidency has sharply criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent condemnation of the Bola Tinubu administration’s reforms, accusing him of habitually undermining successive Nigerian governments. Obasanjo, in his remarks, had criticized the reforms, claiming they have worsened the economic hardship in the country.
In response, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation, described Obasanjo as a man with “a tremendous capacity for mischief.” Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, also accused Obasanjo of consistently casting aspersions on every government after his tenure, calling it a “recurring pastime.”
The Presidency pointed out that Obasanjo has frequently criticized subsequent administrations, including those of President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu. His criticism was viewed as self-serving, particularly in light of his past actions and decisions as president, such as alleged misconduct during his own time in office. The response also highlighted the numerous issues in Obasanjo’s own administration, including corruption scandals, controversial privatizations, and economic mismanagement, suggesting that he should not be taken seriously when criticizing other leaders.
The statement criticized Obasanjo for failing to address key issues during his leadership, such as the state of infrastructure and education, as well as neglecting important security investments. The response also noted the Buhari administration’s military investments and successes in combating terrorism and insecurity, which the Presidency claims were achieved despite the challenges created during Obasanjo’s own era.
