Babatunji Wusu –
Thirteen former fighters of the Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JASDJ), commonly known as Boko Haram, have escaped with rifles and motorcycles provided by the Borno State government. These individuals were part of a program aimed at co-opting former insurgents to assist military efforts against Boko Haram in Borno State.
These ex-fighters are among thousands who have surrendered to the government. Last year, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum announced that over 160,000 Boko Haram members and their families had voluntarily surrendered amid ongoing military operations.
The former fighters and their families are being managed through the Borno Model, a post-conflict amnesty program focused on deradicalization, rehabilitation, reintegration, and resettlement of low-risk individuals previously associated with armed groups.
According to sources, nearly 6,000 combatants are currently awaiting “transitional justice” under this program.
