The Supreme Court on Friday, April 4, 2025, nullified the recognition of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), marking a significant development in the party’s leadership crisis.
Delivering a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal in Abuja lacked the jurisdiction to affirm Abure’s position as party chairman. The court emphasised that the core issue of the dispute concerned party leadership an internal matter over which the judiciary has no authority.
The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other party, declaring it meritorious. In contrast, it dismissed the cross-appeal brought by the Abure-led faction of the LP as unmeritorious.
“The issue before the lower court was clearly an internal affair of the party. The Court of Appeal had no jurisdiction to determine or make pronouncements on the leadership of a political party,” the justices stated.
This ruling effectively reverses an earlier judgment that had favoured Abure and may reignite the leadership tussle within the LP, particularly as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
Observers say the decision underscores the Supreme Court’s consistent stance on non-interference in internal party matters and signals a call for political parties to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms.
As of the time of filing this report, the Labour Party is yet to issue an official statement on the ruling.
