BREAKING: THE EDO ASSEMBLY DIRECTS THE CHIEF JUDGE TO FORM AN IMPEACHMENT COMMITTEE FOR PHILIP SHAIBU

The Edo State House of Assembly has directed state Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa to form a seven-person committee to look into the charges against State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

The assembly claims that the deputy governor acted improperly and leaked to the public private government information.

The panel’s main duty is to conduct a thorough investigation into these claims and offer pertinent suggestions.

Recall that a few days ago, the Edo State House of Assembly began the process of impeaching Shaibu on the grounds of alleged constitutional infractions.

Shaibu, however, has denied the Speaker’s assertion that he received an impeachment notice during the plenary meeting.

The Speaker then said that the House could not serve Shaibu in person, which prompted the employment of a newspaper ad as an alternate means of service.

In a letter marked “RE: Service of Impeachment Notice,” dated March 12, 2024, and sent to the Speaker, Charles Olubayo, Shaibu’s personal assistant, denied ever receiving the letter and declined to accept it.

Olubayo claims that Shaibu could not have been served as claimed during the plenary session because he has been abroad of the state since March 3.

Shaibu’s supporters, however, think that he is being singled out because he wants to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki.

On February 22, 2024, a parallel primary election produced Shaibu as the winner for governor.
