Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has resigned from his role as Nigeria’s Defence Minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, effective immediately.

In a letter dated December 1, 2025, addressed to President Tinubu, Badaru cited health issues as the reason for his departure.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced on Monday night that President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his contributions to the country.

The president is expected to notify the Senate about Badaru’s replacement later this week.

At 63 years old, Badaru served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 and was appointed as minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.

His resignation occurs in the context of President Tinubu declaring a national security emergency, with plans to provide further details soon.
