On Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences to President Yoon Suk-yeo, the South Korean government, and its citizens over the Saturday stampede in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood, which claimed many young lives.
The horrific rush that occurred in the district on Halloween claimed at least 151 lives and injured 82 more.
As the mob surged into a small lane, the South Korean stampede—a group of primarily young people celebrating Halloween—became trapped and crushed.
Foreigners made up two of the victims who died.
It was estimated that up to 100,000 individuals, largely young adults in their twenties, descended on the neighborhood on Saturday night to celebrate Halloween, jamming the small lanes and winding streets.
President Buhari expressed his condolences to his South Korean colleague and prayed for the injured people’s quick recovery.
The entire nation, which was mourning the tragic death of its loved ones, also received his wishes for quick recovery and solace.
President Buhari reassured President Yoon that “Nigeria stands with the people of Korea at this terrible and trying moment” in a statement released by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina. (NAN)
