The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, announced on Tuesday that it has made arrangements to present President Muhammadu Buhari with an award in recognition of his contributions to the defense and promotion of democracy as a form of government throughout the subregion, as he gets ready to leave office at the end of his two-term mandate.
In order for future generations of West African citizens to be aware of the greatness he achieved and to emulate his laudable examples, President Buhari will have his name on the Roll of Honor in the community’s new headquarters building when it is finished in Abuja, according to ECOWAS Chairman and President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

The subregional chairman made the disclosure at a bilateral meeting with Buhari on the sidelines of the ongoing 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar, according to a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

Embalo asserted that the President has made more efforts than any other leader to assist democratic governments in West Africa as well as outstanding efforts to fight the rise of undemocratic regimes.
Buhari praised the idea, emphasizing that democracy is the most effective means to unite disparate groups of people and a reliable tool for achieving national progress.
