Canada secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa on Sunday.

With extra time looming, Eustaquio collected the ball just outside the South African penalty area before unleashing a powerful long-range strike that flew past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, sending Canada into the next round for the first time in the nation’s history.

South Africa, who appeared determined to force the match into extra time and possibly penalties, responded with a late push for an equaliser. However, they were unable to break through Canada’s defence before the final whistle.

The victory sends Canada into the quarter-final race, where they will meet either Netherlands or Morocco on July 4 in Houston.

After the match, Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players for their commitment and resilience throughout the tournament.

“It’s about the two years we’ve been together,” Canada coach Jesse ‌Marsch told the team in a huddle after the final whistle.

“Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan… you guys showing your character. You guys are Canadian heroes ‌here.”

The FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash produced few clear opportunities during a tense first half, with both teams making their debut in the knockout stage and adopting cautious approaches.

Canada came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when a corner caused confusion inside the South African penalty area. Moise Bombito saw his header cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up effort was blocked by Williams.

Moments later, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area, prompting strong appeals for a spot-kick. However, after a VAR review, officials allowed play to continue, drawing loud protests from Canada’s supporters.

Canada continued to dominate after the break and nearly scored again when Tani Oluwaseyi’s effort struck Williams, but Jonathan David was denied on the rebound by an outstanding goal-line clearance from Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Despite South Africa’s disciplined defending for most of the contest, Stephen Eustaquio’s late strike proved decisive, giving Canada a memorable victory and extending their impressive FIFA World Cup campaign.
