– Bankers’ Committee leads $21.3 billion renovation project
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has rallied Nigerians to protect the newly refurbished National Theatre, emphasizing its role in unlocking a staggering $25 billion annually from the creative industry.
Cardoso made this appeal on Thursday while inspecting the modernized facility in Iganmu, Lagos, alongside members of the Bankers’ Committee.
“It is projected that the creative sector can generate about $25 billion. This restoration marks a defining moment, not just for the industry but for the entire nation. A successful transformation here will inspire more collaborations and drive prosperity across sectors,” he stated.
Describing the National Theatre’s facelift as a “monumental milestone,” Cardoso stressed the need for collective responsibility in preserving the landmark.
The historic venue was officially handed over to the Bankers’ Committee in 2021 under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government. Initially budgeted at N21.3 billion, the project was slated for completion within 15 months.
