Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 2-0 in the Premier League thanks to Mason Mount’s two goals (PL). Steven Gerrard under additional pressure despite a promising performance because his team was only one point above the relegation zone.
In each of Chelsea’s previous three trips to Villa Park, they had given up the first goal, but Tyrone Mings’ gaffe made sure that wouldn’t happen this time. After the defensive line was breached by the center back’s header, Mount was given the opportunity to volley the ball beyond Emiliano Martnez.
The under-fire manager was perplexed as to how his side remained down in the game after Gerrard’s team responded wonderfully and dominated much of the first half. Leon Bailey struck a close-range header against the crossbar before finding Danny Ings in the six-yard box, but the forward’s strike was stopped by a brilliant reaction save from Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Raheem Sterling’s counterattacked shot against the woodwork sent Chelsea a warning of their own just before the half. But after seeing his team put on a lackluster performance before the break, Graham Potter brought on Kalidou Koulibaly and César Azpilicueta for the second half. The only thing stopping the visitors from tying the score was the hosts’ underperforming forward line.
Similar to how the game had started, one of Gerrard’s backline members made a mistake that cost him as Chelsea doubled their advantage. Again, Mount was the catalyst; his free kick misjudged Martnez and nestled in the goal to give the Blues all three points. A important win ended Villa’s four-match winning streak while maintaining Potter’s perfect Premier League record at Chelsea.
