– Group condemns suspension of elected officials as unconstitutional
– Warns that military imposition threatens Nigeria’s democracy
– Calls on President Tinubu to adopt a more impartial resolution

The Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) has called on the National Assembly to urgently review President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, denouncing it as a grave assault on Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement signed by State Director Otuekong Franklyn Isong and Secretary Barr. Christopher Ekpo, CHRAN decried the suspension of Rivers State’s Governor, Deputy Governor, and House of Assembly members as unconstitutional and undemocratic. The group accused the administration of orchestrating a deliberate ploy to impose military rule, vowing to resist any attempt to erode civilian governance.

Citing Sections 1(2), 11, 188, and 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), CHRAN asserted that Tinubu’s move violated Nigeria’s legal framework and undermined the principles of electoral legitimacy.

“The CHRAN rejects the imposition of military rule under the guise of a State of Emergency,” the statement read. “We urge the President to approach the Rivers crisis with greater impartiality and respect for democratic norms.”

The organization pressed the National Assembly to act swiftly in reviewing the decision, warning that failure to do so could set a dangerous precedent for governance in Nigeria.
