Edo State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi has confirmed the death of five more persons who were not inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines.

He made this known after the daily virtual meeting of the the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Obi said three of the new fatalities were reported from the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, while the other two were confirmed at the Irrua Specialist Hospital, adding that the new deaths raised the total number of mortalities recorded in the third wave of the pandemic in the state to 64.

The Incident Manager, who reiterated the need for residents to get vaccinated to get protection against the deadly virus, said the government has inoculated over 82,849 persons across the state in the second phase vaccination exercise.

He disclosed that the state will tomorrow, September 21, 2021, begin the administration of the second dose of Moderna vaccines for those who were inoculated with the first dose in the second phase vaccination exercise, urging residents to take advantage of the exercise to get full protection against the virus.

He said, “Edo State, in the last 72 hours, recorded five more deaths from COVID-19; the persons were all unvaccinated, which restates the need for everyone to get inoculated in order to stay healthy and alive.

“We also confirmed 58 new cases from the 492 samples collected across the state within the 72-hour timeframe, with 52 recoveries and 616 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation facilities within the state.”

He further disclosed that the state has so far in the third wave of the pandemic collected 14,898 samples and recorded 1,270 confirmed cases and 590 recoveries, with a test positivity rate of 11.8 percent.
