Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Cristian Romero will become the national team’s new captain after Lionel Messi plays his final game for the country.
Scaloni announced the decision ahead of Argentina’s upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Romero, 28, will take over the captain’s armband from Messi, who has led Argentina through a highly successful period.
The change will mark a new chapter for the world champions after Messi’s departure from international football.
Scaloni has worked with Romero for several years. The defender has also played a key role in Argentina’s recent campaigns.
The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has established himself as an important member of the squad. His performances have also earned him a regular place in Argentina’s starting line-up.
Now, Cristian Romero is set to assume a bigger leadership role within the team.
However, the timing of the change will depend on Messi’s final appearance for Argentina. Scaloni said Romero would inherit the captaincy once the veteran forward ends his international career.
The decision comes as Argentina prepares for a period of transition. Messi has remained central to the team, while several younger players have taken on greater responsibilities.
Romero’s appointment therefore places added focus on his leadership both on and off the pitch.
The defender joined Argentina’s senior team in 2019. Since then, he has become a regular figure in the squad and featured prominently during Argentina’s major international campaigns.
For now, Messi remains Argentina’s captain. But once his international career ends, Cristian Romero will take over the role.
The upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin will give Argentina an opportunity to assess the squad ahead of future international competitions.
