A coalition of civil society groups under the Movement Credible Elections (MCE) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the timetable for the 2027 general elections. The group said adjusting the timelines would protect fairness, inclusiveness, and the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a letter dated May 4 and addressed to the INEC chairman, the coalition requested a 90-day extension for the submission of party membership registers and the completion of pre-primary activities. The appeal came through a partnership between the MCE and the Good Governance Group (GGG).
The letter carried the signatures of notable civil society leaders, including Professor Usman Bugaje, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Dr Isuwa Dogo, and Comrade Olawale Okunniyi. The group argued that several political parties currently face legal disputes that could affect preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to the coalition, “We wish to draw your attention to the urgent need for equitable adjustment of the timelines for the 2027 elections in line with your constitutional mandate towards safeguarding the integrity of 2027 general elections.”
The MCE stated that the issue involves more than scheduling, stressing that the Constitution demands equal opportunity and fairness for all political parties. It referenced Section 77(2) of the Nigerian Constitution, which requires parties to maintain valid membership registers.
The coalition also pointed to recent Supreme Court rulings involving leadership disputes in parties such as the PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, ADC, and SDP. It warned that these legal battles could disrupt congresses, membership updates, and party primaries.
The group further argued that INEC has the constitutional authority to make fair regulatory decisions that will strengthen democratic stability and public confidence in the electoral system.
Do you think changing the election timetable will improve fairness in the 2027 polls?
