Dani Alves, a Brazilian footballer, has reportedly been arrested by Spanish police on sexual assault charges. According to the local newspaper La Vanguardia, Alves was detained after police in Barcelona questioned him about a sexual harassment complaint filed by a woman last year at a nightclub.
Alves claims he has done nothing wrong.
In a statement, the Barcelona court said it had opened proceedings “for an alleged crime of sexual assault as a result of a woman’s complaint for events that allegedly occurred in a nightclub in Barcelona last month.”
Alves was not specifically named in the statement, but a court spokeswoman confirmed to Reuters that he was the subject of the complaint. She stated that the case was being investigated, but that the court had no further information.
According to Spanish media, a woman accused Alves of touching her beneath her underwear without her consent while she was out with friends at a nightclub in late December 2022.
A spokesperson for Alves told Reuters that the player “vehemently denies” all allegations. Alves is currently playing for Pumas UNAM in Mexico.
